Opportunities are running out fast for the President’s economic team to catch up with infrastructure and government spending this year as Congress refuses to budge on the 2019 budget.

Delays in signing the P3.7-trillion budget into law means that the government can not move ahead with new or ongoing projects due to lack of funding.

The economic team even scaled down its growth forecast for the country to just 6.1-6.3 percent.

NEDA chief Ernesto Pernia has taken a different tact to accelerate growth.

“We’re earnestly hoping COMELEC will soon approve the 145 projects we submitted last Feb 18 for exemption from election ban. It would at least attenuate the negative effect the re-enacted budget on GDP growth, employment creation, and poverty reduction,” Pernia said on Twitter.

Pernia is urging the Commssion on Elections to allow big-ticket infrastructure projects to continue even if there’s a ban on all public works starting March 29.
