Dont jack up face mask prices, sellers warned

The Department of Trade and Industry has warned traders of serious consequences should they use the Taal Volcano eruption to unreasonably jack up prices of face and gas masks.

The Department of Trade and Industry has warned traders of serious consequences should they use the Taal Volcano eruption to unreasonably jack up prices of face and gas masks.

DTI issued the statement following reports that some retailers had already raised the price of N95 mask, a safety device that covers the nose and mouth to prevent breathing in some hazardous substances.

Netizens reported that prices have skyrocketed in Bambang in Manila, which is the hub of medical supplies.

“The Department of Trade and Industry hereby issues notice to all retailers that we have dispatched teams to monitor and observe movement of retail prices in the market,” DTI said in a statement on Monday.

“Those found to have unreasonably increased their prices for gas masks, face masks and other similar items, which act is tantamount to profiteering, shall be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law,” it added.

Manila Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan reported that her office got complaints that N95 masks are now being sold at P200 per piece, versus its usual rate of P30 or less.

“MAHIYA NGA KAYO HOY. kahit tumaas ang demand, there’s no HUMANE reason to raise prices. GROW A HEART, YOU PIGS,” one netizen said.
