Senate OKs bill granting Philippine citizenship to JAZA’s wife

Colombia-born Elizabeth Eder Zobel de Ayala, the wife of bilyonaryo Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, is close to becoming a Philippine citizen.

All 21 senators present during their plenary session on Wednesday, December 1 voted in favor of granting Philippine citizenship to Lizzie, as she is more popularly known among social and art circles. This comes two months after the House of Representatives gave final approval to their version of the bill.

Lawmakers are all for granting Filipino citizenship to Lizzie, saying she has “dedicated her life to various socio-civic activities in the country and championing the causes on literacy, education, and family planning,” to name a few.

JAZA’s wife has lived in the country for 34 years and has contributed to the advancement of science in education.

She has been actively advocating the development of Filipino culture and the arts through the Museo Pambata and by sitting as part of the board of the National Museum.

Mrs. Zobel de Ayala also runs several foundations, such as the Sa Aklat Sisikat and Teach for the Philippines, and the Center for Asian Philanthropy and Society.

“Behind a successful man is an even more successful woman. She has been part of bringing the country back to the forefront of protecting children, education and so many more advocacies,” Senate Majority Floor Leader Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri said of Lizzie.

If the House adopts the Senate’s version of the bill, the measure will head straight to Malacañang for President Rodrigo Duterte’s signature.
