Bilyonaryo scoop confirmed! NTC gave ABS-CBN frequencies to Villar who waited 16 years for digital TV license

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has awarded Advanced Media Broadcasting System of bilyonaryo Manny Villar the digital channel of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp.

In a statement, NTC explained that Advanced Media was the “first applicant” in line for Channel 16 after filing his application as early as October 2006.

Channel 16 became available after ABS-CBN’s franchise expired in May 2020 and its application for renewal was blocked by a congressional committee in July of the same year.

The NTC also gave Advanced Media a temporary permit to broadcast its programs simultaneously on Channel 2, the analog frequency previously owned by ABS-CBN.

“The temporary assignment is for simulcast purposes only and only until the analog shut-off (or shift to digital channels) scheduled in 2023. (This is ) to ensure service to both analog and digital TV signal users as the country transitions to full digital TV,” said NTC.

NTC stressed that the provisional authority was granted after vetting Advanced Media’s legal, technical and financial qualifications.

The Department of Justice issued a favorable opinion backing the awarding of ABS-CBN frequencies which was concurred with by the Office of the Executive Secretary.

Villar has already obtained the approval of the Senate and Congress to transfer ownership of Advance Media (which had its franchise renewed in 2019) to Planet Cable, a fiber internet provider managed by his son Paolo.

The NTC issued the statement just hours after Bilyonaryo.com posted its exclusive story on Villar’s takeover of ABS-CBN’s frequencies.
