Mikee Romero’s AirAsia PH flies high as passenger traffic jumps three-fold in Oct-Dec 2021

AirAsia Philippines saw a 201 percent jump in the number of passengers transported in the fourth quarter of last year due to resumption of air travel demand during the holiday season.

The Philippine unit of AirAsia Group Bhd of Malaysia carried 354,886 passengers from October to December 2021, more than three times the 117,948 transported in the same period a year ago.

Business magnate Mikee Romero-led AirAsia Philippines also recorded its highest quarterly load factor at 85 percent, up by 21 percentage points year-on-year.

“This was achieved from strong pent-up demand in a number of core destinations including Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Boracay, and Tacloban,” AirAsia Philippines said.

Available seat kilometers more than doubled to 285 million from 133 million.

Meanwhile, the AirAsia Group changed its name to Capital A Berhad to reflect its growing business portfolio as it seeks to expand into logistics, aircraft engineering, venture capital, education and mobile applications. This is in line with its goal to become a one-stop digital travel and lifestyle services group.

“ It’s a significant milestone that marks a new era for the Group. Today’s announcement reinforces we are not just an airline anymore,” said Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A.
