Property paycheck faceoff: SMPH gave highest CEO pay among big property firms but ALI still has the fattest bonuses in 2021

SM Prime Holdings (SMPH) has nosed out rival Ayala Land Inc. as the best paying property company in terms of CEO pay in 2021.

But the Ayala-controlled property firm still has the best compensation package for its CEO and top four highest paid executives among property firms because of its fat bonuses compared to the Sy family’s real estate arm.

Based on corporate filings, SMPH paid P149 million in salary to its president Jeffrey C. Lim and four highest paid executives – CFO John Nai Peng Ong, president for malls Steven Tan, president for residential Jose Mari Banzon, and president for leisure Shirley Ong – in 2021, the highest among the country’s largest real estate companies. SMPH posted a 21 percent year on year hike in profit to P21.8 billion.

ALI was second with a top executive pay of P140.9 million for its CEO Bernard Vincent Dy and SVPs Dante M. Abando, Augusto D. Bengzon, Anna Ma. Margarita Dy, and Jose Emmanuel H Jalandoni in 2021. ALI booked a 40 percent year on year increase in profit to P12.2 billion in 2021.

The other top property firms and their 2021 top executive salaries are: Megaworld (MEG) P90.9 million; Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) with P58.543 million; and Filinvest Land Inc. (FLI) with P24.79 million.

ALI, however, still trumped SMPH in total CEO compensation package with by far the biggest bonus given in the industry – P64.6 million (excluding stock options) in 2021 compared to SMPH’s P25 million.

ALI also has far and away the best compensation package for executives in the industry with P910.6 million in salary and bonuses in 2021 compared to SMPH’s P414 million, MEG’s P264.5 million, RLC’s P106.82 million and FLI’s P22.8 million.

Ultra bilyonaryo Manny Villar’s Vista Land Lifescapes has yet to submit its audited financial statement for 2021.
