CAAP: Operations in Bicol airports unhampered despite Mt. Bulusan eruption

Airports in the Bicol region were left unscathed by the phreatic eruption of Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon Province on Sunday, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said.

CAAP said Bulan Airport, Sorsogon Airport, Daet Airport, Masbate Airport, Naga Airport, Virac Airport, and Bicol International Airport reported no damages in their facilities and that commercial flights remained unhampered.

“We remain vigilant and alert for the volcano’s next activities. As of now, our airports have been safe from the wrath of Mt. Bulusan’s eruption,” CAAP Area V manager Cynthia Tumanut said.

CAAP has also updated its Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to reflect the current situation in the vicinity of Mt. Bulusan.

With the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raising its alert on Mt. Bulusan to level 1, CAAP said entry to the volcano’s four-kilometer permanent danger zone is strictly prohibited. Flights operating 10,000 feet from the surface have also been prohibited.
